Enhancing Mental Well-being in Older Age

Mental health and well-being are as important in older age as at any other time. However, many older adults face mental health challenges, such as life transitions, loss of loved ones, chronic illnesses, social isolation, or stigma. That’s why Agecare Foundation Kenya invited a psychologist to talk about mental health and counseling older people in July 2023.

The psychologist explained some of the common mental health issues that older adults may experience, such as:

  • Depression: Depression is more than just feeling sad or blue. It is a persistent and pervasive mood disorder that interferes with daily functioning and enjoyment of life. Depression can cause symptoms such as low mood, loss of interest, guilt, hopelessness, insomnia, fatigue, appetite changes, and suicidal thoughts.
  • Anxiety: Anxiety is a normal and adaptive response to stress or danger. However, when anxiety becomes excessive, irrational, or uncontrollable, it can impair one’s quality of life. Anxiety can manifest as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Dementia: Dementia is not a specific disease but a term that describes symptoms affecting memory, thinking, and social abilities.

The psychologist also shared some of the benefits of counseling for older adults who are struggling with mental health problems, such as:

  • Counseling can provide a safe and confidential space for older adults to express their feelings, thoughts, and concerns without fear of judgment or rejection.
  • Counseling can help older adults identify and challenge negative or distorted beliefs that may contribute to their emotional distress.
  • Counseling can teach older adults coping skills and strategies to manage stress, anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues.
  • Counseling can enhance older adults’ self-esteem, resilience, and well-being by helping them recognize their strengths and resources.

The psychologist concluded the talk by encouraging the audience to seek help if they are experiencing any signs or symptoms of mental health problems. The psychologist emphasized that mental health problems are not signs of weakness or failure but common and treatable conditions that can affect anyone at any age. The psychologist also reminded the audience that Agecare Foundation Kenya offers various services and programs to support older adults’ mental health and well-being.

Agecare Foundation Kenya thanks the psychologist for sharing their knowledge and expertise. We hope that this talk has increased your awareness and understanding of mental health and counseling of older people.
